One-dimensional settlement sensitivity
Lesson review: expert verification remains open
This lesson has received a full-context editorial review and a check of its technical explanations. Selected arithmetic has been checked separately. This is not independent engineering sign-off.
Checks needed for project use
- Bridge component studies and adjustable examples still need an independent bridge-engineering review, including applicability, load models and detailing guidance.
- Specialist review remains for: Choose drained or undrained assumptions for the timescale. Compare settlement estimates, consolidation and soil–structure interaction; calibrate model parameters against ground investigation. The settlement calculation is a local idealisation; it does not verify the displayed bridge or applicable design requirements.
These are educational models and exercises. Check their assumptions before using the results. The full technical content and every diagram have not yet been independently verified.
Concrete and steel calculations retain their stated first-generation Eurocode teaching basis. Use the standards and amendments specified for your project; do not mix generations without an appropriate design basis.
Read the lesson register and outstanding review notesLoads and actions
Ground sees concentrated foundation loads, approach fill, water changes and excavation unloading. Strength and stiffness are different properties and both matter.
Choose a model
Choose drained or undrained assumptions for the timescale. Compare settlement estimates, consolidation and soil–structure interaction; calibrate model parameters against ground investigation.
Design considerations
Compare shallow foundations, piles, ground improvement and a changed span layout. Check settlement compatibility with the route and scour where relevant.
Durability and maintenance
Groundwater changes, erosion and adjacent works can alter the support environment. Establish baseline levels and triggers for monitoring.
One-dimensional settlement sensitivity
Uniform one-dimensional strain only; does not model stress spread, consolidation time or a layered foundation.
Assume constrained modulus 10 MPa and stress increment 100 kPa: settlement s = ΔσH/M.
Settlement = 40.0 mm
