outfall
Combined runoff sensitivity
Lesson review: expert verification remains open
This lesson has received a full-context editorial review and a check of its technical explanations. Selected arithmetic has been checked separately. This is not independent engineering sign-off.
Checks needed for project use
- Bridge component studies and adjustable examples still need an independent bridge-engineering review, including applicability, load models and detailing guidance.
- Specialist review remains for: Check flow capacity, tailwater, flood levels, erosion and pollution pathways. The drainage calculation must include the receiving system, not stop at the end of the bridge pipe. The runoff calculation is a local idealisation; it does not verify the displayed bridge or applicable design requirements.
These are educational models and exercises. Check their assumptions before using the results. The full technical content and every diagram have not yet been independently verified.
Concrete and steel calculations retain their stated first-generation Eurocode teaching basis. Use the standards and amendments specified for your project; do not mix generations without an appropriate design basis.
Read the lesson register and outstanding review notesLoads and actions
The outfall must receive the combined runoff without eroding soil, undermining foundations or discharging onto a live route. Receiving water can impose backpressure.
Choose a model
Check flow capacity, tailwater, flood levels, erosion and pollution pathways. The drainage calculation must include the receiving system, not stop at the end of the bridge pipe.
Design considerations
Compare a connected drainage network, protected headwall or managed treatment/discharge arrangement as appropriate. Establish consent, ownership, maintenance and access for the actual location.
Durability and maintenance
Inspect scour, debris, vegetation, submerged outlets and bank stability. Trace recurrent upstream ponding back to possible restrictions or high receiving-water levels.
Combined runoff sensitivity
Illustrative local mechanics. Confirm the real action values, geometry, combinations, material properties and applicable requirements before design.
For this single illustrative catchment: Q = 0.9 × i × 280 / 3600 L/s. Real outfalls combine all tributaries.
Q = 7.00 L/s
