Structural analysis / exercises

Structural foundations

Modules 1 to 6: modelling, equilibrium, internal actions, trusses, cables and arches. Several of these need two ideas at once — find a reaction and then use it, or recognise which of two methods applies.

Teaching basis and review status

These are educational models and exercises. Check their assumptions before using the results. The full technical content and every diagram have not yet been independently verified.

Concrete and steel calculations retain their stated first-generation Eurocode teaching basis. Use the standards and amendments specified for your project; do not mix generations without an appropriate design basis.

Practice

A simply supported beam spans 9.00 m and carries a UDL of 16.0 kN/m over its whole length plus a 40.0 kN point load 3.00 m from the left support. What is the left-hand reaction, in kN?

Practice

For that same beam, what is the bending moment at the position of the point load, 3.00 m from the left support, in kNm?

Check yourself

A plane truss has 15 members, 9 joints and 3 reaction components. What can you say about it?

Practice

A cable spans 60.0 m between level supports with a mid-span sag of 6.00 m, carrying 12.0 kN per horizontal metre. What is the horizontal component of tension, in kN?

Practice

A three-pinned parabolic arch of the same span and rise (60.0 m, 6.00 m) carries the same 12.0 kN/m. What bending moment does it carry at the quarter point, in kNm?

Check yourself

You are told a beam diagram is a triangle peaking at mid-span, with a peak ordinate of 3.0 m. What is it?
