Computational Engineering / module 1

What computational engineering is

What a computer is good at, what it is not, and how to decide whether a problem needs one at all.

What you will understand

  • State what computation adds to structural engineering and what it cannot add
  • Distinguish a number from an insight
  • Explain why detail is not accuracy and convergence is not correctness
  • Choose between mental estimate, hand calculation, spreadsheet, script, dedicated software, general analysis and no model at all
  • Say who is responsible for a computational result

Lessons

  1. The computer as engineering assistant

What computation does well, what it does badly, and why the division of labour matters more than the tool.

  2. Choosing the method

Nine ways to answer a structural question, and how to pick the cheapest one that actually answers it.

  3. Responsibility for the output

Who owns a computational result, what a review is for, and why 'the software gave me that' is not a defence.

Module summary
  • A computer processes instructions; it has no idea what a structure is
  • Sixteen significant figures of output tell you nothing about accuracy
  • A converged solution is a solution to the model you built, not to the structure
  • A plausible picture is the least reliable evidence a model produces
  • The engineer is responsible for the output, including the parts nobody looked at
  • Choosing the method is an engineering decision that precedes every other one
  • The cheapest analysis that answers the question is the right analysis
Teaching basis and review status

These are educational models and exercises. Check their assumptions before using the results. The full technical content and every diagram have not yet been independently verified.

Concrete and steel calculations retain their stated first-generation Eurocode teaching basis. Use the standards and amendments specified for your project; do not mix generations without an appropriate design basis.

Check your understanding

Check yourself

Which of these is the strongest evidence that a finite element model is giving a usable answer?

Check yourself

You are asked whether a 250 mm flat slab spanning 7.5 m will be acceptable for footfall vibration in an open-plan office. What is the correct first move?

Practice

A floor beam model reports a maximum deflection of 0.0000134 m under serviceability load, on a 7.2 m span. Compute the span-to-deflection ratio and say, in the answer box, that ratio to the nearest thousand.
