ICE / Attributes and evidence

Attribute answer studio

Examine one piece of evidence for clear responsibility, decisions and outcomes.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with ICE before applying.

Choose a paragraph about one occasion at work. Examine what the account explains and what remains unclear.

Use it on evidence, not on prose

The most common mistake candidates make in their last month is editing. A submission gets better-written and no better evidenced, and the gap between the quality of the document and the quality of the answers becomes its own signal at interview.

Before you improve any sentence, mark each paragraph as participation, contribution or decision. If most of them are not decisions, editing is the wrong task, and the month is better spent obtaining one real example than polishing four thin ones.

About the scaffold

The evidence map uses context, responsibility, action, judgement, outcome, reflection and evidence. That is the Forum’s way of organising your thinking, not an ICE formula, and there is no official template.

It is built from ICE's own statement that you should expand on decisions you made, problems you met and lessons you learned, and from the requirement to indicate your role by reference to the decisions you were responsible for. But your report itself should read as a narrative from your role activities: the guidance asks you specifically not to work through the attributes in sequence, and a report written to a seven-box template is working against it.
