Keep a progress summary alongside your quarterly reports. IStructE's record provides a continuing view of your position across all ten Core Objectives.

Reviewing progress across the objectives

A quarterly report records work over three months. The progress summary helps you see which objectives have received little attention across a longer period.

For example, four years of work might produce deep evidence in four objectives, adequate evidence in four and little in two. Commercial and legal experience or sustainability may need deliberate attention. Reviewing the summary every quarter can reveal that pattern within eighteen months, leaving time to seek other work.

Using the summary with a mentor

Bring it to each meeting and ask:

  1. Which objectives have not moved since last time?
  2. What would move them, on the work available to me in the next six months?

Use the answers to agree opportunities and update your plan. The gap analysis supports the same discussion.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Which objectives have not moved in a year?

This is the question the summary exists to answer, and it is the one candidates ask too late.

  2. Am I recording the level, or just the activity?

The objectives are set at Knowledge, Experience or Ability. Progress means moving up that scale, not accumulating more of the same.

  3. What would move my two weakest objectives, on work I could be given?

A development action has to be something a line manager can say yes to. 'More commercial experience' is not; 'the fee for the next package' is.
