The Research and Development route

Understand the route for engineers working in research or development.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.

IStructE provides a route recognising research and development practice for engineers whose work differs from the project-based practice assumed by the Core Objectives.

Evidence from research and development

Several Core Objectives concern project delivery, including design, construction, management and commercial work. A researcher three years into a doctorate on welded-connection fatigue may have advanced analysis and materials experience but less conventional evidence in those areas. The Research and Development route allows assessment of the work they undertake.

Assessment requirements

The route retains Professional Review and the competence standards. It allows evidence from research or development to be assessed in its own context.

Relevant roles

The route may suit academic or industrial researchers, specialist analysts, engineers developing software and those working on standards, codes or technical committees.

Identifying your contribution

For each objective, explain what you did and the responsibility you held. Evidence may include:

  • Professional standards: Institution engagement, committees, peer review, CPD and recognition of competence limits.
  • Communication: papers, presentations, teaching, reports and explanations for non-specialists.
  • Analysis and sizing: advanced technical work.
  • Materials: testing or materials research.
  • Sustainability: the research question and its implications.
  • Construction, management and commercial work: grants, programmes, researcher supervision, laboratory safety, test procurement and industrial collaboration.

Review how the research was organised as well as its technical findings. Confirm the route with IStructE before planning an application.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Does IStructE agree that my practice fits this route?

It is the Institution's determination, not a self-assessment, and it changes what evidence you should be collecting from now on.

  2. Which grade am I seeking, and are the objectives the same?

The minimum standards are held per grade, and one objective differs between Incorporated-Member and Chartered Member.

  3. Who can act as my mentor, given where I work?

The individually managed route needs a personal mentor; in a university or laboratory the right person may sit outside your immediate group.

  4. How will the examination work for me?

The examination assesses scheme design under time pressure, which is furthest from a research engineer's daily practice and needs the most deliberate preparation.

Where a research career's evidence tends to sit

Core ObjectiveWhere the evidence usually is
1 Professional standardsInstitution engagement, technical committees, peer review, CPD, the limits of a specialism
2 CommunicationPapers, conference presentations, teaching, technical reports — often the strongest objective
4 Analysis and sizingUsually strong, and frequently beyond what delivery work would show
5 MaterialsExceptionally strong where the research is materials-based
6 SustainabilityOften the research question itself
7 ConstructionLaboratory work, test rig construction, industrial collaboration, site trials
9 ManagementGrant management, supervising researchers, programme and resource, laboratory safety
10 Commercial and legalFunding bids, procurement of testing, intellectual property, collaboration agreements

the Forum’s own mapping, offered as a starting point for a gap analysis. It is not an IStructE statement, and it does not change what any objective requires.

Evidencing a research career

Look for

  • Claim the management and commercial work involved in running research
  • Treat laboratory safety as genuine health, safety and risk evidence
  • Use teaching and publication as communication evidence
  • Confirm with IStructE that this route applies to you, in writing
  • Plan deliberately for the examination, which is furthest from research practice

Watch for

  • Assume the objectives are waived
  • Undersell grant, supervision and procurement responsibility
  • Leave construction and commercial objectives unevidenced without trying
  • Plan around requirements you have not had confirmed
  • Expect the route to change the standards: it changes where the evidence comes from
