Continuing Professional Development

Plan learning around the decisions and responsibilities in your work.

SHARED GUIDANCE

Use this guidance to plan your learning. ICE and IStructE set and assess the requirements for their own routes.

Find a real learning need

Use project uncertainty, a new responsibility, a review comment or a changing technical topic to identify learning. An activity is useful when it improves what you can do.

Record application and reflection

Write what changed in your understanding and where you applied it. A time total or course title alone does not demonstrate useful development.

Keep competence current

After recognition, responsibilities and technical knowledge continue to change. Make space for technical, ethical, communication and leadership development.

Plan, apply, reflect.

CPD can include reading, project work, mentoring, seminars and discussion, as well as learning a professional skill. Record why you undertook the activity, what you learned and where you applied it. Add any question or further learning need that emerged.

After chartership, use the same cycle when your role, methods or responsibilities change. Confirm any grade-specific record requirements with your institution.
