Mentoring and peer support

Use an informed conversation to test your understanding, identify a gap and agree a useful next step.

SHARED GUIDANCE

Use this guidance to plan your learning. ICE and IStructE set and assess the requirements for their own routes.

For the developing engineer

Bring a real piece of work to each meeting. Explain your role and the decision you made, then ask which competence it demonstrates and where your account is weak.

For the mentor

Challenge the reasoning, scope of responsibility and evidence. Help the engineer find opportunities, and keep advice separate from any formal institution sign-off.

Agree the next step

Agree one development opportunity and one record to improve. Return to both at the next meeting.

Two sides of the conversation.

For mentees: prepare one example, identify a gap, ask for a specific challenge and act on the feedback. Bring your development record to an annual appraisal and agree a next opportunity.

For mentors: test the depth of evidence, ask who held responsibility, look for gaps across the route and agree attainable targets. Make clear where formal SCE, DE or other institution duties apply.
