6. Sustainability

Explain how sustainability affected quantities, material choices or reuse decisions across the structure's life.

The minimum standard is Experience for both Incorporated-Member and Chartered Member.

What strong and weak evidence look like

Look for

  • A quantity you reduced, with the design decision that reduced it.
  • An embodied carbon comparison you carried out, with the assumptions that mattered.
  • Reuse or retention of an existing structure, and the assessment that made it defensible.
  • A whole-life argument you made, whether it won or lost.
  • An honest account of where a project made things worse.

Watch for

  • The project's sustainability strategy, offered as your evidence.
  • Listing UN Sustainable Development Goals with no decision attached.
  • A carbon saving claimed with no idea of the baseline.
  • Sustainability described entirely as site waste recycling.

Portfolio items that tend to work here

Suggestions, not a required list. What matters is that the item is yours, that it is annotated, and that it demonstrates the standard rather than the subject.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. What did I do differently because of sustainability?

If the answer is nothing, the evidence is not there yet, and it is better to find that out early.

  2. Where is the carbon in what I designed?

Reviewers often start here. Not knowing suggests the analysis was somebody else's.

  3. What did my project make worse?

The objective is honest about negative impacts. Candidates who only claim benefit sound unconsidered.

The same objective, in different kinds of work

SettingWhat the evidence tends to look like
New buildReducing a frame or a foundation through better information or a revised load path, with the saving quantified.
Existing structuresMaking retention defensible through assessment rather than assertion.
InfrastructureExtending an asset's life through intervention rather than replacement.

Illustrative. The objectives are written to be met in a range of ways by anyone practising as a structural engineer.

How reviewers tend to approach this objective

  • Asking what you personally changed, not what the project claimed.
  • Asking where the carbon sits in your structure.
  • Asking how you would argue a low-carbon option against a cost target.
  • Asking about the difference between embodied and operational carbon.

There is a bank of original practice questions in the interview question bank, filterable by objective and by grade.
