Why it matters

Choosing work to address a gap helps you gain the experience you need.

What you will understand

  • Plan IPD as a cycle of work, feedback and adjustment.
  • Recognise breadth and depth in your experience.
  • Use mentor conversations to create an actionable development plan.

Core material

Compare your present responsibilities with the competence themes of your chosen route. Identify what experience is missing and what work could provide it. Agree work that could develop the missing judgement or responsibility, and set a point to review what changed.

Engineering example

If you have only observed commercial decisions, seek an opportunity to prepare an option comparison or explain a scope change with appropriate supervision.

Reflection questions

  1. Which competence area has the thinnest evidence?
  2. What work would let you take responsibility for a decision?

Practical exercise

Write one development action with an opportunity, a person to discuss it with and a review date. Specify the experience you need and how the opportunity would provide it.
