Writing useful EngTech evidence

Explain your practical contribution, method, checks and result.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with ICE before applying.

Explain your practical contribution, method, checks and result.

Begin with your task

State the issue, your instruction and your authority. Explain the method, checks and outcome. If an engineer made the final design decision, say so. Your measurements, drawing work or investigation can still provide useful evidence of the contribution that informed the decision.

Build one account

  1. 01

    Issue and role

Describe what needed resolving and the task allocated to you. Identify what you could decide and what required referral.

  2. 02

    Information and method

State the source information, procedure and assumptions. Explain how missing information affected the task.

  3. 03

    Checks and communication

Explain your checks and another person’s review. Include a query or change where it shows your contribution.

  4. 04

    Outcome and learning

State what happened and what the record confirms. Explain what you learned and would do differently.

Engineering example

Illustrative setting: an inspection record

THIN ACCOUNT

I completed inspection sheets.

MORE USEFUL ACCOUNT

I compared inspection references with the asset register and found two locations transposed. I checked photographs and notes, corrected the draft and asked the supervisor to review it. The issued record identified the locations correctly. I added a location check to later preparation.

This shows a bounded task, a detected error, checking and a change in practice.

Make records useful

Give supporting items a reference and point to the detail that supports the claim. A large unannotated drawing is difficult to assess. A permitted extract with revision, context and contribution explained is easier to follow. Follow employer permissions and redaction procedures.

Describe uncertainties honestly. If you do not know whether a recommendation was implemented, separate your completed task from the later outcome. Do not claim that a limited check proved something beyond its scope.

Practical exercise

Choose a recent task and write about one page for personal discussion. Ask a colleague to identify your responsibility, method and result. Add explanations where these are unclear. Map the account to requirements it actually supports. This exercise length is Forum advice and does not replace application limits.

Use the technician evidence worksheet online or download its CSV. Keep sensitive details in approved systems.

Evidence quality

For personal preparation. Ticking these checks does not confirm competence or eligibility.
