Explore the Technician-Member route, develop structural engineering evidence and prepare your application.

What the route recognises

TIStructE is Technician Membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers. Eligible members can also apply for Engineering Council EngTech registration. Membership and registration are distinct; confirm the registration choice through the institution’s process.

Use this guide if you contribute to structural drawings, detailing, technical information, construction or related tasks. Models and drawings can provide evidence, but you also need to explain the engineering and responsibilities behind them.

Understand the route

  1. 01

    Confirm the foundation

Check qualifications or apprenticeships with IStructE. Resolve uncertain equivalence before applying.

  2. 02

    Choose an IPD arrangement

The IPD guide explains individually managed, retrospective and comparable training arrangements as alternatives.

  3. 03

    Build objective evidence

Use the eleven Technician Core Objectives and their grade-specific standards. Keep personal examples and relevant records.

  4. 04

    Prepare the submission

Use the portfolio guide for the experience report, objective forms and supporting records.

  5. 05

    Follow the assessment outcome

The initial assessment may support election from the documents or require an interview. The interview is conditional.

  6. 06

    Maintain professional practice

Keep CPD and conduct current after election. Follow separate membership and registration instructions.

Begin with your work

Explain one structural task: what you produced, the engineering information it relied on and how it was checked. The evidence guide helps distinguish your contribution from the team’s design responsibility. Compare it with the requirements and plan missing experience.

The Forum explains learning. It cannot confirm academic equivalence, approve an IPD arrangement or assess a portfolio. Keep current official guidance beside this material.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Can I explain the structure shown in my drawings?

Discuss the relevant load paths, stability and construction at the required standard.

  2. What record shows my work?

Identify a permitted item and the contribution it supports.

  3. What needs institution confirmation?

Separate eligibility from personal development actions.
