Technician IPD: choosing an arrangement

Choose how to record development against the TIStructE Core Objectives.

Choose how to record development against the TIStructE Core Objectives.

The objectives stay the same

The July 2026 guidance gives three IPD arrangements. They organise development and presentation of experience; they do not create different competence standards. Choose the one that matches your history, records and support. Use the eleven Technician objectives throughout.

Three arrangements

  1. 01

    Individually managed

Develop with a personal mentor and maintain quarterly reports, progress summaries and a plan. Read the guide.

  2. 02

    Retrospectively collated

Use previous experience to prepare objective forms and a portfolio where a mentor or scheme was unavailable. Read the guide.

  3. 03

    Comparable accredited training

Relevant records from another accredited scheme can support development, while still addressing IStructE requirements. Read the guide.

Plan from the gaps

For each objective, identify a task, required standard and record showing your contribution. Make gaps specific. “More site experience” is hard to act on. “Discuss the sequence behind this connection detail during a supervised fabrication visit” has a clearer purpose. Agree the opportunity and supervision.

Work can support several objectives, but explain the relevant contribution each time. An objective map is an evidence index, not a score proving completion.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Which arrangement fits my records?

Do not claim a scheme history that was never followed.

  2. What standard applies?

Distinguish appreciation, knowledge, experience and ability.

  3. Which gap needs practical work?

A rewrite cannot supply missing experience.

Keep manageable records

Capture tasks, checks, feedback and learning regularly. Retain source documents in approved systems and note their references. Examine selected work with a mentor. Complete official final forms when the experience supports the requirements.
