Organise previous experience into objective reports and a portfolio.

When this arrangement helps

The guidance provides a retrospective arrangement where a mentor or scheme has not been available. Use relevant experience to prepare objective reports and the portfolio. The arrangement does not remove competence requirements or make a work history sufficient evidence by itself.

Reconstruct carefully

  1. 01

    Build a factual history

List roles, dates and structural work. Identify changing responsibility and checking arrangements.

  2. 02

    Locate permitted records

Find representative work available for legitimate use. Check permission before copying previous-employer information.

  3. 03

    Map the evidence

Use current Technician standards and explain what each item demonstrates.

  4. 04

    Address missing experience

Seek appropriate new work where necessary. Retrospective reporting cannot create experience never gained.

Advice and signatures

An experienced professional member can help examine evidence. Under the checked guidance, retrospective final forms do not need mentor comments or signatures. The application’s supporter requirement remains separate. Ask IStructE if the documentation for your circumstances is uncertain.

If an original item is missing, state what remains. Do not present a new illustration as a historic project issue. Label retrospective explanations accurately and discuss whether the available evidence is sufficient.

THIN ACCOUNT

I have many years of structural experience.

MORE USEFUL ACCOUNT

I found a permitted extract and its issue history, explained my interface checks and described the engineer’s review. I stated which records were unavailable and did not claim a later construction outcome I could not verify.

Specific work makes the contribution understandable; length of employment alone does not.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. What can another person verify?

    Be clear about record limitations.

  2. Which objective remains weak?

    Plan an appropriate opportunity.

  3. Are new explanations labelled accurately?

    Distinguish them from original records.

Check the submission

Use the evidence and portfolio guides. Test references and consistency with your experience report. Write in your own words so you can explain the account if an interview is requested.
