ISTRUCTE / Portfolio and evidence

Building TIStructE evidence

Explain structural understanding and personal contribution behind technical work.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.

Explain structural understanding and personal contribution behind technical work.

Make the contribution traceable

A drawing or model is an output. Evidence also explains why it is arranged that way, which information you used and how it was checked. Identify the part you produced and distinguish your authority from design approval. Keep enough structural context without submitting an entire project file.

Write an account

  1. 01

    Context and role

Name the issue, allocated task and supervision.

  2. 02

    Understanding

Discuss the structural, material, construction or information question at the objective’s required standard.

  3. 03

    Action and check

Describe what you did, how it was checked and why a referral or revision was needed.

  4. 04

    Outcome and reflection

State what the record confirms and how feedback changed later work.

Engineering example

Illustrative setting: a connection drawing

THIN ACCOUNT

I completed the steelwork model and drawings.

MORE USEFUL ACCOUNT

I prepared a connection drawing from the engineer’s information, identified an interface conflict and marked it for review. I revised it after clarification, checked dimensions and recorded issue status. I explained how erection access affected the detail without claiming the connection design as my own.

This separates technical production, structural understanding and approval responsibility.

Avoid a software-only account

Explain the question the tool helped answer and how you checked inputs, units and outputs within your competence. A green status indicator is difficult to evaluate without context. Do not submit another person’s calculation as your own. Ask IStructE about team-produced work where authorship cannot be separated clearly.

Portfolio work must be your own. Clearly identify the contribution to a shared project and follow current guidance. Permission and authorship are separate questions; both require attention.

Prepare the reference

Use an item reference and a specific page or detail. Explain its purpose in the objective form and annotate it in the portfolio. The evidence worksheet helps capture this before completing official documents.

Evidence quality

For personal preparation. Ticking these checks does not confirm competence or eligibility.
