Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.
Examine evidence for this Technician objective. Minimum standard: Knowledge.
Examine your task
Explain the properties, durability or movement issue affecting your detail and its specification.
Choose work where the contribution is yours and a record supports the account. Give structural context, then focus on your part. Explain who supplied design information, what you could decide and what needed checking. Keep claims proportional to the work.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: a material interface
I have used concrete and steel.
I compared the detail with cover and interface requirements, marked an inconsistency and revised it after clarification. I explained why protection and tolerance information needed to remain visible.
This is an original teaching example, not an assessed submission, official model answer or real project record.
Evidence and reflection
Consider a checked detail and specification reference. Identify the revision, relevant location and contribution. Explain what it demonstrates and its limits. Obtain sharing permission and retain engineering context after redaction.
Discuss one uncertain part with a mentor. Ask them to question your reasoning and the scope of the check. Record what you now understand and what needs further work.
Questions to ask yourself
- Which material property affected the detail?
Explain a particular event and its reasoning.
- Which requirement does this demonstrate?
Compare it with official wording.
- What experience remains missing?
Agree a practical action and review date.
Practical exercise
Annotate a permitted item and explain its relevance in a short note. Ask a colleague to identify your role from the note alone. Revise unclear wording and add it to the objective index. Keep an example as development evidence if it does not yet reach the required standard.
