Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.
Examine evidence for this Technician objective. Minimum standard: Appreciation.
Examine your task
Discuss how the arrangement relates to load paths, stability, construction and other disciplines. Distinguish the engineer’s decisions from your understanding.
Choose work where the contribution is yours and a record supports the account. Give structural context, then focus on your part. Explain who supplied design information, what you could decide and what needed checking. Keep claims proportional to the work.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: a structural arrangement change
I drew the engineer’s scheme.
I asked how the stability system affected openings, annotated the agreed load path and coordinated the drawing changes. I explained how it constrained my details.
This is an original teaching example, not an assessed submission, official model answer or real project record.
Evidence and reflection
Consider an annotated scheme sketch and discussion note. Identify the revision, relevant location and contribution. Explain what it demonstrates and its limits. Obtain sharing permission and retain engineering context after redaction.
Discuss one uncertain part with a mentor. Ask them to question your reasoning and the scope of the check. Record what you now understand and what needs further work.
Questions to ask yourself
- Which concept feature controlled your work?
Explain a particular event and its reasoning.
- Which requirement does this demonstrate?
Compare it with official wording.
- What experience remains missing?
Agree a practical action and review date.
Practical exercise
Annotate a permitted item and explain its relevance in a short note. Ask a colleague to identify your role from the note alone. Revise unclear wording and add it to the objective index. Keep an example as development evidence if it does not yet reach the required standard.
